Questions About Labiaplasty?

The number of women undergoing labiaplasty to resize or reshape their labia (vaginal lips) has steadily increased in recent years. Despite the rise in numbers, the procedure has yet to be as openly discussed as other cosmetic procedures. If you experience discomfort or are self-conscious about the appearance of your labia and are considering labiaplasty, you are not alone. In this blog post, leading New York plastic surgeon Dr. Sanjiv Kayastha answers the most commonly asked questions he receives from patients seeking labiaplasty in Albany, NY.
When Should I Consider Labiaplasty?
Do you feel self-conscious due to enlarged, elongated or unusually shaped labia? Do you avoid wearing tight clothing (i.e., bathing suits, yoga pants) to avoid an embarrassing bulge? Do you suffer physical discomfort or painful chafing when riding a bicycle, or during other forms of exercise? Perhaps sexual intercourse is physically and/or emotionally uncomfortable because of the size and shape of your labia. If you can relate to any of these scenarios, you may be a suitable candidate for labiaplasty.
What Does the Procedure Entail?
Labiaplasty can be performed to address two main issues. Labia minora reduction resizes overly large vaginal inner lips (labia minora). During the procedure, Dr. Kayastha trims the inner vaginal lips to relieve discomfort. With labia majora remodeling, Dr. Kayastha removes loose, hanging skin from the outer lips (labia majora). If necessary, he will use liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue from the labia majora. Labiaplasty typically takes one to two hours to complete.
Is Labiaplasty Painful?
Because labiaplasty is performed under general anesthesia, the procedure itself is relatively painless. During the first few weeks after surgery, your genitals will be slightly bruised, tender and swollen. Dr. Kayastha may prescribe mild pain medication to relieve the minor discomfort.
Does Labiaplasty Leave Noticeable Scars?
During the procedure, Dr. Kayastha will make small, well-concealed incisions in the natural folds of the labia. Because of this, any scarring will be minimal and barely, if at all, noticeable.
Will Labiaplasty Enhance my Sexual Pleasure During Intercourse?
For many women, dissatisfaction with their labia can affect their libido. Some women may experience physical discomfort or pain during sex. Others may feel embarrassed by the appearance of their labia and therefore avoid sex. By improving the size and shape of the labia, the physical and psychological discomfort is often relieved, making sex a more pleasurable experience.
