Breast Augmentation Questions

Albany, Schenectady & Saratoga Springs Breast Implants

What should happen before I undergo breast augmentation?

You will need to schedule a breast implants consultation at our Schenectady plastic surgery office. During this consultation, Dr. Barach will thoroughly explain the details of the procedure, including a discussion of breast implant placement options and potential incision locations. He will also show you many before and after photographs of other patients so that you can get a better feel for what the results will look like.

How old do I have to be to have breast augmentation?

As of May 2000, federal regulation prohibits breast augmentation for purely aesthetic purposes in women under the age of 18.  If you want silicone implants, you must be 22.

How big should I go when choosing the size of my implants?

Schenectady plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Barach will be able to give you some advice about the appropriate size for your breast implants. In general, Dr. Barach will not recommend an implant size that is too big for your body type, since this may lead to a less natural-looking result as well as potential complications down the road, such as:

  • Sagging
  • Back pain
  • Revision procedures

Will my breast implants feel natural?

This will depend on several factors. The more of your own breast tissue you have before the operation, the more likely that the implants will feel natural after the operation.

Can a woman breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Most women who have had breast augmentation find breastfeeding with implants to be no more difficult than breastfeeding without them. Because the implant is placed in a pocket under all of the breast tissue, the milk ducts that bring milk from the lobes and lobules of the breast to the nipple are usually not disturbed or cut during the surgery.
