What to Expect after your Rhinoplasty

Albany, Schenectady & Saratoga Springs Nose Jobs

After your rhinoplasty, the amount of swelling you experience and your estimated healing time will vary somewhat depending on the extent of work done and other factors that Albany plastic surgeon, Dr. Barach will discuss with you. Here is what you can expect after a typical rhinoplasty:

  • You can usually resume non-strenuous activities within a few days.
  • You will likely experience some minor bleeding immediately following your surgery. Minor bleeding may occur up to ten days after the operation. However, bed rest and sedation are usually enough to halt it. Excessive bleeding is extremely rare and if it occurs, you should notify Dr. Barach immediately.
  • You may experience varying degrees of discomfort due to the packing in your nose or due to blood clots that may be clogging your nose. Bandages and packing are typically removed within a week.
  • You will experience some swelling and black and blue discoloration around your eyes. While other swelling normally recedes within several days, the bruises around your eyes usually last for a week to ten days, but rarely longer.
  • You can hide areas of discoloration with sunglasses, and makeup can be applied to camouflage the bruising.
  • Your "new" nose will already look good when your bandages are removed, but the end result will not be obvious until the last little areas of swelling have disappeared and your skin has completely tightened over the rebuilt framework. You will see most of the result within a week or two, but the final appearance of the refinement of the tip can take several months.
  • You should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight for the entire healing process by using strong sun block. As time goes by, you should look increasingly better until the effect of your “new” nose is complete.
