Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which enhances the appearance and often the function of your nose. Commonly referred to as a "nose job," rhinoplasty is performed as a means to reach a variety of aesthetic, corrective, and reconstructive goals. It can be performed to:

  • Straighten a crooked nose
  • Remove a dorsal hump
  • Reduce a nose that is too long or wide
  • Taper the tip of the nose
  • Narrow the nostril span
  • Correct other nose irregularities

A septoplasty is often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to correct breathing problems that result from nasal passage obstruction. Other procedures such as chin augmentation may also be performed in order to enhance the aesthetic results of your nose reshaping.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty may have any of the following:

  • A large nose
  • A long nose, or a plunging or drooping nasal tip
  • A large hump on the nasal bridge
  • A wide, thick, ill-defined, or bulbous nasal tip
  • An excessively wide nose
  • Excessively flared nostrils
  • Breathing problems

In addition, you must be at least 13 years old, be in good overall health, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure.

Your Rhinoplasty Procedure

Saratoga Springs plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Barach mainly performs open rhinoplasty procedures because he believes they are more direct, more precise, and more predictable.

Dr. Barach will make an incision across the columella (the area at the base of the nose between your nostrils) and peel back the skin on the tip of your nose to expose the cartilage. At this point, Dr. Barach can alter the framework of the nose. Once healed, the incision will leave a tiny scar on the underside of your nose that will be barely noticeable to others.

You will be given detailed instructions regarding your rhinoplasty after-care. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing.
