Gynecomastia is a condition affecting approximately 50% of the male population. It is characterized by excess localized fat and/or glandular tissue in the breast region. While gynecomastia is not considered a serious health problem, it can be a source of embarrassment.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Treatment?

Ideal candidates for gynecomastia treatment:

• Are in good overall health
• Maintain a normal weight for their body type
• Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
• Feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts
• Have reached a point where breast development has stabilized
• Have good skin elasticity

Teens who have suffered from gynecomastia may be eligible for treatment; however, often the problem will go away on its own in time.

In general, you are not a good candidate for gynecomastia treatment if you are obese. You will need to take steps to lose weight through diet and exercise before you can be considered for a male breast reduction procedure.

Gynecomastia Treatment

Albany plastic surgeon Dr. Bruce Barach uses both liposuction and “cut and sew” procedures to correct gynecomastia. He will recommend the appropriate procedure based on your unique individual needs.

Liposuction is generally the preferred treatment method if your enlarged breasts are due to an excess of fatty tissue. Dr. Barach will make a tiny incision either around the edge of the areola or in the underarm region. He will then use a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to suction out the excess fat.

If your condition is mainly due to excess glandular tissue or if there is a lot of loose, droopy excess skin, you will most likely require a “cut and sew” procedure. Dr. Barach will remove the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breast region. Your incisions will then be closed and covered with a protective dressing.
